Two investors can have the same market, the same filings and the same platform, and still spend their time completely differently. The difference is not the tool. It is the question they ask it.
Previously in this series: Episode 1 — how the machine actually works: algorithms, APIs, OMS, RMS and colocation
Two investors can have access to the same market, the same company filings and the same trading platform — and still use their time very differently. One spends the evening jumping between television, WhatsApp forwards, charts, half-read annual reports and social media. The other uses AI to organise the same information, verify the important points and arrive at a cleaner research question.
The second investor is not automatically smarter, and the AI is not automatically right. The difference lies entirely in how the tool is used: to read long documents, compare figures across years, spot inconsistencies, prepare summaries and support a process that can be repeated next quarter.
Episode 1 of this series explained the machinery — how AI, algorithms, APIs, OMS, RMS and colocation fit together in the Indian market, and which part does what. This episode is about your desk. How does an ordinary account holder, a beginner, a long-term investor or an active trader actually get value out of these tools, without sliding into blind dependence?
At Ashlar we see the pattern often enough to state it plainly. The clients who get value from these tools are not the ones running the cleverest software. They are the ones who ask for the right thing.
The first rule: ask for work, not a verdict
Most investors begin with the wrong question: “Which stock should I buy?” That single sentence hands the machine an authority it has not earned, and gives it almost no context to work with: nothing about your goals, your time horizon, your existing holdings or your capacity to sit through a loss.
A better approach is to give AI a defined piece of work. Summarise the risks disclosed in this annual report. Compare debt and cash flow across five years. Explain why the operating margin moved. List what information is still missing before a decision can be made.
The change looks small. It is not. A verdict invites confidence. A request for evidence creates a research trail — and a trail is something you can check, argue with and return to six months later.
A better prompt
Read the attached annual report. Identify changes in revenue, margins, debt, cash flow, receivables, promoter holding and auditor comments. Cite the page number for every important figure. Separate what the document states from what you are inferring. Do not recommend whether I should buy or sell.
How an account holder can use AI without becoming a trader
Not every client wants to study balance sheets or trade derivatives. Many want to understand what is happening in their own account, and that is a perfectly good reason to use these tools.
Explanation is one of AI’s most useful roles. Give it a contract note, a demat statement, a margin shortfall message, a corporate action notice or an unfamiliar charge, and it will unpack the thing in ordinary language. It turns a dense paragraph into a list of questions worth putting to your broker, renders a routine explanation in Hindi, and gets you ready before you pick up the phone.
Consider the difference in outcome. Calling any broker with “something is wrong in my account” produces a long conversation and little progress. Working through a redacted statement first — separating trades, statutory charges, brokerage and ledger entries — lets you arrive with a precise question. The service team can answer a precise question in a minute.
For a beginner, AI is a patient teacher
The market has a private language: pledge, haircut, T+1, circuit limit, open interest, expense ratio, tracking error, and several dozen more. Beginners are often reluctant to ask the same basic question a third time, and so they nod and stay confused.
A machine does not tire of the third asking. The same idea can be explained as a one-line definition, as a household analogy, as a worked example with real rupee figures, or as a short quiz. It can set delivery trading beside futures, an ETF beside a mutual fund, a limit order beside a market order.
This is among the safest and most valuable uses of generative AI, because the goal is understanding rather than immediate execution. Even so, check product features and rules against current broker, exchange or SEBI material. A settlement cycle or a charge structure can change without the model noticing.
A learning prompt
Explain margin pledge to a first-time Indian investor. Use a worked example with ₹1 lakh of shares. Make clear what the client continues to own, what “collateral” means here, what haircut applies and what risks or charges I should check with my broker.
Using AI for stock research: reports, results and peers
Reading annual reports faster
An annual report holds a great deal of useful information, and none of it is arranged for a reader in a hurry. A capable assistant can pull out a five-year financial table, condense the management discussion, set earlier promises against later performance, and locate the related-party transactions and contingent liabilities that most retail investors never reach.
Ask for page references, and ask it to separate reported fact from its own inference. Those two instructions cut the risk of invented figures more than any other single habit.
Quarterly result analysis
A quarter becomes far more legible when it is read against both the previous quarter and the same quarter a year earlier. Did profit growth come from operations, from lower finance costs, from a one-off item, or from a change in tax?
The better questions come next. Does cash flow support the accounting profit? Have receivables or inventory risen faster than sales? Has management quietly changed its guidance from the last call?
Peer comparison
Investors comparing two companies in the same sector usually stop at valuation. A wider comparison takes in the business model, the revenue mix, debt, return ratios, margins, customer concentration, governance signals and the principal risks each one carries.
The output should not end with “Company A is better.” It should say where each business is stronger, and what evidence would change the conclusion. A comparison you cannot overturn is not analysis; it is a preference with a table attached.
When AI is confidently wrong
Everything above assumes the output is good enough to be worth checking. Usually it is. But these tools fail in a way no human research assistant fails, and the difference is worth naming.
A weak answer from a person usually sounds weak. There is hesitation in it. A weak answer from a model arrives in flawless prose, correctly formatted, with a plausible number in the right place. Nothing in the delivery signals that it was invented.
In an Indian market context, four failures recur:
- Similar names. Companies with near-identical names, or a listed parent confused with an unlisted subsidiary. The financials returned belong to a real company — just not the one you asked about.
- Superseded rules. A circular that was amended, a settlement cycle that has since changed, a tax rate from an earlier Finance Act. The model has no sense of what expired.
- Misread tables. A figure lifted from the wrong column of a PDF: the previous year read as the current one, or a consolidated figure read as standalone.
- Invented precision. A ratio that was never printed anywhere, computed from two numbers that should not have been divided.
The defence is not suspicion of everything. It is proportionate checking.
Portfolio analysis and concentration checks
A portfolio can look diversified simply because it holds many names. Ten stocks do not mean ten risks. A proper review often shows that several holdings depend on the same underlying factor. A bank, a housing-finance company, a cement producer and a real-estate developer may all be riding the same interest-rate and property cycle.
AI can classify holdings by sector, market capitalisation, valuation band and risk driver. It will also flag duplicated exposure between direct equity and mutual funds, the single most common blind spot in Indian retail portfolios, and set the whole portfolio against the goal and time horizon you have stated.
What it cannot do is decide your risk tolerance. That requires facts it does not have and should not guess: income stability, existing debt, the size of your emergency fund, family obligations, and your honest capacity to watch a holding fall by half and do nothing.
A portfolio prompt
Using the attached redacted portfolio, classify each holding by sector and by the main economic factor it depends on. Show concentration by sector and by the top five positions. Identify any overlap between my direct equity and my mutual funds. List the questions I should answer before rebalancing. Do not suggest trades.
Comparing mutual funds properly
Mutual fund comparison usually stops at the one-year return, which is close to the least informative number available. A more useful comparison takes in rolling returns, volatility, drawdowns, the expense ratio, performance against the stated benchmark, portfolio overlap, sector concentration, and any change of fund manager or mandate.
It can also explain why two funds with similar names behave nothing alike. A large-and-mid-cap fund, a flexi-cap fund and a focused fund may hold several of the same companies while operating under quite different limits and concentration rules.
One caution applies here as everywhere. Past returns are a description, not a promise. The output should help you understand the product; it should never be allowed to forecast an outcome.
For the active trader, the gain is discipline — not prediction
This one deserves saying plainly, because trading is where wishful thinking costs the most. SEBI’s own studies of individual traders in equity derivatives have repeatedly found that the large majority lose money, with aggregate net losses running into lakhs of crores across a financial year. No tool changes that arithmetic. What a tool can change is whether you repeat the same mistake for the fifth time.
A trading journal becomes far more valuable when AI groups winning and losing trades, checks whether losses cluster at a particular hour, and compares the risk you planned with the risk you actually took. It may show that you do well in trend-following trades and lose steadily while averaging down — a pattern that is obvious in aggregate and invisible trade by trade.
It can also turn a vague idea into testable rules: entry condition, invalidation point, position size, maximum daily loss, exit logic. It can write the code for a backtest. But you still have to check the code, the data, the costs, the slippage, and whether the test accidentally used information that would not have been available at the time.
Options: use AI to make risk visible, not to predict expiry
Options combine direction, time and volatility, which is why a position can behave nothing like the simple directional bet you thought you were placing. Here AI earns its place by explaining the Greeks, comparing payoff structures, summarising changes in the option chain and modelling how a position behaves under different scenarios.
Ask for a table: profit or loss if the underlying rises, falls or stays flat; if implied volatility expands or collapses; and as expiry approaches. That turns an abstract position into visible risk, which is exactly what most option traders are missing at the moment they place the order.
Two limits. AI should not be trusted to estimate live margins or premiums without a verified current data source. And a probability is not a forecast. Leverage does not soften because the explanation was well written.
An options prompt
Explain the maximum loss, maximum profit, break-even points, time-decay exposure and volatility risk of this defined strategy, using the premiums I have provided. Show five market scenarios including a gap opening against the position. Do not predict where the index will expire.
A five-step workflow that holds up
Everything in this episode reduces to one loop. It is worth internalising, because it works the same way whether you are reading a statement or building a backtest.
- Define. State exactly what work you want done, and what you do not want, including “do not recommend a trade”.
- Source. Supply the official document, statement or dataset wherever one exists. An answer built on your document beats an answer built on the model’s memory.
- Instruct. Ask for page citations, tables, stated assumptions and acknowledged limitations.
- Verify. Check the figures that matter against the original. Not all of them — the ones you are about to act on.
- Decide. Apply your own context, suitability and accountability. This step cannot be delegated. No tool will carry the consequences of it.
What AI should never be allowed to do
Confidence in the language is not authority over the money. Here is the short list. None of it is theoretical.
- Do not accept guaranteed-return claims or “fixed daily profit” bots, whatever technology they invoke.
- Do not let software place live orders before the rules, the limits and the failure cases have been tested.
- Do not rely on live prices or market data the tool has produced from memory rather than a verified feed.
- Do not upload confidential personal or account information into unapproved systems.
- Do not treat general AI output as personalised regulated advice. It is not, and you have none of the protections that come with the real thing.
SEBI’s investor education material has said the same thing for years, long before any of this: do your own research, and reject unrealistic or assured-return promises. AI has changed the packaging. It has not touched the principle.
The real efficiency gain
AI does not make an investor efficient by producing more information. Most investors are already drowning in it. It creates efficiency by removing repetitive work and leaving more room for judgment.
For an account holder, that might mean understanding a statement before calling support. For a long-term investor, reading five annual reports in the time a single one used to take. For a trader, finding the recurring mistake buried in a journal. Used carelessly, these tools generate confusion faster. Used well, they return the one resource nobody can buy more of: attention.
Ashlar’s view
Use AI to improve clarity, speed and control — not to manufacture certainty. Every market decision that matters should still rest on verified information, suitability, an honest view of your own risk capacity, and human accountability.
If something in your contract note, ledger or holding statement does not make sense, you are welcome to work through it with a tool first. Then bring the specific question to us. Our investor cell is at investorcell@ashlarindia.com, and the toll-free helpline is at the foot of this page. Please do not send account credentials or OTPs to anyone, including anyone claiming to be from Ashlar.
A final way to think about it
Treat AI as a reader, an organiser, a comparison engine, a drafting assistant and a risk checker. It will help you ask better questions and notice what deserves your attention.
It should not become your conscience, your risk tolerance, or your excuse. The investor still owns the money. The trader still owns the loss. Ashlar, like every regulated broker, remains responsible for its process and for the systems it chooses to run.
Twenty years ago, an edge in this market often came from receiving information before other people did. Today the information reaches nearly everyone at once. The advantage has moved to understanding it faster, filtering the noise, and acting with discipline. A machine can genuinely help with all three. That is the whole of its usefulness, and it is quite a lot.
Test yourself: ten questions
Tap a question to see the answer
1. What is the single most important change to make in how you prompt?
Ask for work, not a verdict. “Summarise the risks disclosed in this report” produces something you can check. “Which stock should I buy?” produces confidence you cannot check.
2. Is it safe to paste your full contract note into a public AI tool?
No. Redact account numbers, PAN and bank details first, unless your institution has given you an approved secure workflow. Never share passwords or OTPs with any system or person.
3. Why ask AI for page citations?
Because it makes verification practical and sharply reduces invented figures. A number with a page reference can be checked in seconds; a number without one has to be trusted.
4. Ten stocks in a portfolio means ten different risks.
False. A bank, a housing-finance company, a cement producer and a real-estate developer can all depend on the same interest-rate and property cycle. Count risks, not names.
5. What is the most common overlap Indian retail portfolios miss?
Duplication between direct equity holdings and mutual fund holdings — owning the same companies twice without realising it.
6. What is the most useful question an active trader can ask AI?
Not what the index will do tomorrow, but what their own trading record shows they repeatedly do wrong. That answer exists in the data; the other one does not.
7. Name two ways AI goes wrong specifically in an Indian market context.
Any two of: confusing similarly named companies or a listed parent with an unlisted subsidiary; quoting a superseded circular or old tax rate; misreading a PDF table column; producing a ratio that was never printed anywhere.
8. Should you verify every single figure an AI produces?
No — verify in proportion to consequence. A definition can go unchecked. A number you are about to place an order on cannot.
9. Can AI decide your risk tolerance?
No. That needs facts it does not have — income stability, existing debt, emergency funds, family obligations, and your honest capacity to sit through a fall without acting.
10. What are the five steps of the workflow?
Define, Source, Instruct, Verify, Decide. The last step is the one that cannot be delegated.
Frequently asked questions
How can an investor use AI for stock research?
AI can summarise annual reports, compare financial trends across years, prepare peer tables, surface contingent liabilities and related-party transactions, and list the questions still unanswered. Ask for page citations, and verify important figures in the original filing before acting on them.
Can AI analyse my portfolio?
It can classify holdings by sector and risk driver, measure concentration, and flag overlap between direct equity and mutual funds. Redact personal information first. Any rebalancing decision still has to account for goals, taxes, costs and your own risk tolerance.
How can traders use AI safely?
The strongest uses are journal analysis, converting a vague idea into testable rules, backtesting assistance, scenario analysis and risk review. AI is not a prediction engine, and treating it as one is how trading accounts are emptied.
Can AI predict where Nifty or Bank Nifty will expire?
No. It can model how a position behaves under different scenarios, which is genuinely useful. A scenario is not a forecast, and a probability is not a certainty.
Is information entered into an AI tool private?
Not automatically. Read the tool’s data policy, and do not upload passwords, OTPs, PAN, bank details or confidential records into systems your institution has not approved.
How do I know if the AI has invented a number?
Ask for the page or source of every figure, ask it to separate stated facts from its own inference, and check anything you intend to act on against the original document. Fluent language is not evidence of accuracy.
Can AI replace a financial adviser?
No. Personalised investment advice is a regulated activity in India, carried out by registered persons who are accountable for suitability. A general-purpose tool is neither registered nor accountable.
What is the safest way to use AI in investing?
Define the task, supply the official source, instruct it to cite and to state its limits, verify what matters, and make the decision yourself. Every failure this article describes comes from skipping one of those five steps.
Annual report
Page reference
Peer comparison
Mutual funds
- Define.
- Source.
- Instruct.
- Verify.
- Decide.
Ashlar
Define, Source, Instruct, Verify, Decide.
